Many of Nirvana fans didn’t like Leto’s recreation and thoroughly spoke their minds out
Just a day after the 17th death anniversary of legendary rocker Kurt Cobain, Jared Leto posted a clip on his website, in which he acted just like the Nirvana frontman and sang their smash hit song “Pennyroyal Tea.”
While the fans were struck by the realness of the emotions put into the voice and the video shoot of the song, the critics think of it as more of an audition for the Cobain-based movie, which has been a much discussed but less-executed project until now. Let however maintains that he just wanted to delve into the enigma that was Cobain and look into what it was like to be in his creative world. On April 30, the 30 Seconds to Mars-vocalist got another chance to clarify what he actually meant by the short clip and what were the reasons, which lead him to make such a video.
Leto recalled that he met Courtney Love a year and a half ago at the Chateau Marmont. While talking to her, the topic of a book titled ‘Heavier Than Heaven’ came up and he vowed to read the book, as he is a huge Cobain and Nirvana fan. He then read the book and just as he expected he was fascinated by its contents. Leto knew in the back of his mind that Love and company had been mulling over the decision to make a movie on the life of Cobain, and therefore he decided to explore his character by making a short clip. The video wasn’t supposed to be made public initially. In fact, Leto claims that he never sent it to any producer, studio or anyone else. But as Cobain’s anniversary passed, Leto decided to share it with his fellow Nirvana fans to get their feedback and that’s why he let the video fly on his website.
Many of Nirvana fans didn’t like Leto’s recreation and thoroughly spoke their minds out. Although Leto wasn’t aware of the negative feedback he has received by some of the viewers, he understands their disapproval. However, he says that it just felt right doing so and he never intended to harm Cobain’s legacy.
He explained, “Some people thought it was a tribute to Kurt Cobain, and maybe in some ways it is. I mean, it’s a testament to him, but it was really just an exploratory process. You know, I make films, I’ve been an actor all my life, too, and you don’t necessarily have to act when you’re getting paid to show up on a set and do it. That was just an exploration for me.”
Leto also revealed that he hasn’t seen the clip himself as he has been busy working on other projects. He normally liked to work on the editing part of his visual creations, but on this occasion Leto said that he just felt like doing it and moving on, instead of being glued for hours in the editing room like he always does. “I made it, I’m done [and] I gave it away,” the movie cum singer said.
